AAK Team Philippines finished 2nd overall to host Team Malaysia in the 3rd Asian
KOI Karate Championships 2009 held 03-06 December 2009 at the KLBA Stadium
in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Host Malaysia topped the competition with 8 Golds, 7
Silvers and 11 Bronzes to the AAK Team Philippines 6 Golds, 2 Silvers and 3
Bronzes. Korea with 6 Golds, 2 Silvers and 2 Bronzes finished third. The other
Philippine Team consisting of selections from PKF clubs finished in 15th place. Over
270 athletes coming from 24 registered clubs competed in said event.
The Kobe Osaka International (KOI) is the biggest and most prestigious karate
clubs championship in the world. Kobe Osaka International is a non-political
organization. Its objective, among others, is to spread the practice and enjoyment of
karate-do through international co-operation and friendship amongst people
regardless of race or creed, by means of international seminars, training camps, and
competitions. The Organization is led by World Karate Federation (WKF) Referee
Council Chairman Tommy Morris. Aside from the Asian segment the KOI holds yearly
World Cups and Training camps participated in by top players from all over the world
representing their respective clubs. The next 19th KOI Karate World Cup and
Training Camp is scheduled to be held in the Netherlands. In this year’s 18th KOI
Karate World Cup and Training Camp held last 19-26 July 2009 in Sarawak,
Malaysia, AAK Team Philippines won 3 Golds, 3 Silvers and 4 Bronzes.
The AAK Team Philippines with 15 athletes was headed by KOI Instructor and KOI Kumite Referee and Kata Judge Richard Anthony Lim.
