The 12 man delegation led by Richard “Ricky” Lim Sensei and Juan Carlos “Chino” Veguillas Sensei joined the prestigious Kobe-Osaka International (KOI) Training Camp which was held in Dresden, Germany last July 15-18, 2002.
The KOI training camp is a 4-day karate course whose main focus
was not only to inform athletes of the rules of tournament karate but also gave
them a hands-on or practical application of the rules of competition. Training
was divided into 3 groups: the Instructors’ course, the Kumite course
and the Kata course.
Ricky Lim Sensei and Chino Veguillas Sensei joined the Instructors’
course which tackled Shitei or required Kata as well as Kihon or basics of the
4 major styles of karate namely Wado Ryu, Goju Ryu, Shito Ryu and Shotokan Ryu.
Ricky Lim Sensei, who is a certified and licensed World Karatedo Federation
(WKF) Judge, not only took active participation in the Instructors’ course
but taught Goju Ryu Kihon and Shitei Kata as well. Ricky Lim Sensei is currently
a mainstay instructor of the KOI along with world-renowned WKF referees and
judges like Javier Mantilla of Venezuela, Jaap Smaal of the Netherlands, Referee
Council member Loh Beng Hooi of Malaysia and WKF Referee Council chairman and
KOI founder Tommy Morris of Scotland.
The Kata course featured WKF Referee and Kata Judges Jaap
Smaal Sensei and Loh Beng Hooi Sensei who taught Shotokan Ryu Kata. Kata studied
during the course for Shotokan Ryu were Shitei Kata Jion and Kanku Dai as well
as Tokui or Free Kata like Gankaku, Nijushiho, Kanku Sho, Bassai Sho, Gojushiho
Sho and Unsu. AAK’s very own Raissa Mikaela Velasquez of St. Scholasticas’s
College - Manila was a favorite among the senseis of the KOI including of Smaal
Sensei who often chose Raissa to demonstrate kata to other students. Stephanie
“Tani” Lim Sensei on the other hand attended the Shito Ryu Kata
course under the guidance of WKF Referee Javier Mantilla Sensei and Steven Morris
Sensei of Scotland son of KOI founder and World Karatedo Federation (WKF) Referee
Council Chairman Tommy Morris Sensei.
Others present at the KOI training camp were Homer Panal Sensei,
Rex Resurreccion Sensei, Joel Eddie Mallillin Sensei, Rogelio “Ogie”
Bueno Jr. Sempai along with Junior Blackblelts Norman “Sonny” Montalvo
Sempai, Vincent Filologo Pante Sempai, Roberto Miguel Velasquez Sempai and Daryl
Ray Dumayas Sempai. They attended the Kumite course handled by Alister Macalister
Sensei of Scotland, Richard Callaghan Sensei and Marco Mazantti Sensei of Australia.
The course made players from different nations feel at ease with their counter
parts exploring and studying kumite drills and tactics with each other. At times
the senseis of the Kumite course would call on either Homer Panal Sensei or
Norman Montalvo Sempai to demonstrate moves, which the two picked up quite easily.
It was during the training camp that Saxon Karate Federation
President and 11th KOI host Wolfgang Weiger Sensei saw the Senior and Junior
Kata Team practicing after the Training Camp. Awed by their performance, Weiger
Sensei immediately told the AAK karatekas that they would later perform at the
opening ceremonies of the 11th KOI Karate World Cup.
The Training Camp and player registration was in part shouldered
by the Association for the Advancement of Karatedo–Parents and Supporters
Association (AAK-PSA) whose aim was to help support deserving athletes in international
competitions. Also present at the training camp were AAK-PSA President Filologo
Pante, Mr Rogelio & Dr. Rosemarie Bueno. Other sponsors were Senator Manuel
Villar, Congresswoman Cynthia Villar, Mandaluyong Mayor Benjamin C. Abalos Jr.,
Mayor Gerardo V. Calderon of Angono, Rizal, Atlas Shipping, Angkan Holdings,
and Bro. Jimmy Dalumpines Executive Vice- President De La Salle Zobel.
